Why would a dog become aggressive?

Baton Rouge Dog Bite Lawyers - Joubert Law Firm

Dog attacks send thousands of Americans to the emergency room every year. If you are a victim of a dog attack, you may pursue the animal owner for compensation through a Louisiana premises liability lawsuit.

But rarely do dogs attack out of the blue. From small nicks that may go unnoticed to full-blown attacks that might leave the victim with severe injuries, there are several reasons why dogs might resort to biting their victims. Here are some of them:

Out of fear

Fear is one of the major triggers of aggression in dogs. When someone, especially a stranger, gets uncomfortably close to the animal, they might become fearful. Dogs bite out of fear in an attempt to create space from the threat in question.

When they are startled

A dog can bite when it is startled, especially if it has been sleeping. A startled dog may be disoriented and confused about its surroundings and what is going on around them. As a result, it might react by biting the person nearby. This type of attack is especially common when a child crawls into a dog’s bed or hits a sleeping dog.

Out of frustration

Dogs tend to become aggressive when they are overwhelmed. When a dog is trapped in a situation that renders it uncomfortable and helpless, it may become violent to break free. A dog can also feel frustrated when it cannot reach something it wants due to restrictions by the owner’s leash.
