What are the differences between highside and lowside accidents?

|

While motorcycles might offer immense freedom on Louisiana roads, they can be dangerous in the event of a crash. Two types of crashes you’ll want to avoid are high-side and low-side crashes. With that in mind, here’s a closer look at the differences between high-side and low-side accidents.

Lowside crashes

It takes a lot of skill to make a sharp turn on a motorcycle. Considering that, this is when many low-side crashes happen. A low-side crash occurs when either your front or rear wheel slides out while you’re cornering. This type of sliding usually happens due to too much acceleration or when you’re taking a corner too fast.

When comparing lowside and highside crashes, the former is often less damaging than the latter. You can help prevent low-side crashes by taking corners slowly and changing down gears if necessary.

Highside crashes

A high-side crash takes place when your motorcycle’s rear wheel loses its grip and quickly regains it. These types of motorcycle accidents are typically far more dangerous to a rider and their bike.

Highside crashes often cause the rider to get hurled over their bike. It’s also possible for the bike to collide with the rider as it continues rolling. The best way to avoid these accidents is to not over-correct your motorcycle when a rear-wheel slide happens.

It’s critical for motorcyclists to prevent both low-side and high-side crashes whenever possible. By avoiding the driving behaviors that lead to these crashes, you can keep yourself and your motorcycle safer on the road.
