Can you spot a distracted driver before it’s too late?

|

Distracted driving has been in the news a lot over the last decade. Specifically, the use of cellphones behind the wheel has been blamed for thousands of car accidents. It’s clear that distracted drivers are a danger to themselves and those around them.

That said, you may find yourself wondering exactly what types of driving errors these distracted individuals make. Distraction itself isn’t the issue so much as all of the avoidable errors drivers make while distracted. If you know what errors they tend to make, you may be able to spot – and avoid — these drivers on the road.

Indications that someone is distracted

Naturally, every situation is unique, but the following are a few common issues that crop up when someone isn’t paying full attention to the road or the task of driving the car:

  • They swerve off onto the shoulder, into oncoming lanes or back and forth within their own lane.
  • When a light turns green, they don’t start driving immediately because they didn’t see it change.
  • They tend to brake suddenly and aggressively, having only noticed the need to brake at the last second.
  • Their speed is erratic, and they often slow down or speed up for no reason at all.
  • They run stop signs or red lights, completely oblivious to the signal until the last second — if they see it at all.

When drivers make these mistakes, they can cause serious injury or death in mere seconds. If you’ve been injured or lost a loved one due to the negligence of a distracted driver, be sure you know how to seek the necessary compensation.
