What is the easiest way to avoid causing a car accident?

|

Do you do all that you can to be a safe driver? Are you interested in avoiding accidents at all costs, and do you especially want to avoid causing a crash yourself?

There are many ways to do this, such as becoming a defensive driver, eliminating distractions in the car and avoiding operating your vehicle at dangerous times on the road, such as late at night. However, one of the easiest ways to keep from causing a wreck is just to follow the 3-second rule.

What is the 3-second rule?

In essence, the three-second rule just governs how far behind another car you should drive. Pick something on the road, like a dashed line or a traffic sign. Watch for the car ahead of you to pass it. Then count off three seconds. If you don’t pass it before those three seconds are up, then you’re far enough back.

Getting closer than this means you may not have enough reaction time if something unexpected happens- such as if the car ahead of you has a malfunction and quickly stops. If you’re only a second back, it may take you half a second just to realize that you need to stop. By the time you hit the brakes, it’s too late, and a crash may be unavoidable.

If you have three seconds, though, you have time to process what is happening and bring your car to a halt. This is why the police say that you should never tailgate another motorist.

Of course, even if you never break this rule, other drivers may get too close to your car. If one of them causes an accident, then you need to know how to seek compensation
