E-Biking During Hunting Season: Know the Rules Before You Ride

Hunting season is coming up soon, and I can’t wait to get out there myself. I know a lot of you are swapping your four wheelers for e-bikes—and that can be a great idea:
- They’re quieter
- They don’t smell like gas
- You can ride right up to where you need to go
But there are additional things you need to remember.
1) Know your e-bike class and modes
Before you head out, confirm:
- What class your e-bike is
- Whether you can switch modes (and what those modes allow)
2) Check state-by-state rules
Rules can change depending on where you are. If you’re traveling, check the regulations where you’ll be riding—not just where you start.
3) Understand federal land rules
On federal land, rules can be very specific:
- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) often points to Off-Highway Vehicle areas and motorized trails.
- Agencies like the Forest Service may treat e-bikes like motorized vehicles.
4) Watch for restrictions in special areas
- National Parks can restrict throttle usage.
- Wilderness areas are typically off-limits for many types of motorized travel—including e-bikes depending on rules.
5) Verify what’s open right now
What’s closed this year may be open next year—and vice versa. Always verify current access before you ride.
Local rules vary widely
For lands managed by local or state governments, regulations can differ significantly. Some state parks allow e-bikes on trails where standard bicycles are allowed.
