How to prevent dog bites

|

Dogs are commonly known as man’s best friend, but that doesn’t mean that every dog is going to be friendly with you. A dog is still an animal; sometimes, their instincts take over, and they will attack. Here are some tips that can help you avoid getting bitten by a dog in Louisiana.

Don’t approach unknown dogs

If you are on a walk and see a random dog, you shouldn’t immediately approach it. You don’t know whose dog that is or what that dog has been through, so it is best to keep your distance. If you walk up to an unfamiliar dog, it may think that you’re trying to attack it or that it needs to protect its territory from you, which can lead to a dog bite injury.

Pay attention to body language

You should try to become familiar with dog body language so that you can better understand what a dog may be feeling. When a dog gets scared, it will pull back, hide its tail and attempt to make itself look smaller. When a dog is angry and preparing for an attack, it might make itself appear larger, show its teeth and growl at you.

Don’t run

If you feel like a dog might bite you, the last thing you should do is run away. If you run away, you might activate the dog’s instinct to chase its prey, and the dog will begin to chase you.

The best thing to do in this situation is to remain motionless and let the dog see that you are not a threat. You should also avoid making eye contact with the dog because the dog might think that prolonged eye contact means you’re challenging it.

It’s important to keep all these things in mind when interacting with dogs you’re unfamiliar with. They’re just acting on their instincts, so you should strive to make dogs feel comfortable around you.
